American factory activity decelerated in October, while an underlying gauge of activity in factories that make metal products contracted for the first time in about two years. Americans paychecks rose in the past year at the fastest rate in more than a decade, showing a tight labor market is paying dividends for more workers. The White House said it has pledges from companies to create more than 6 million job-training opportunities, part of an initiative to address job market changes and a shortage of qualified workers.
