Global economic growth is slowing, but central banks have struggled to
build up their policy arsenals since the last crisis to effectively deal with
another one. U.S. and Chinese trade negotiators start a new round of talks; one
often-overlooked issue is bound to get a lot of U.S. attention: the role of
China’s state-owned companies in its economy. The European Central Bank opened
the door to new stimulus measures to prop up the region’s economy, as policy
makers navigate fractious U.S.-China trade negotiations and disruptive
political events such as Brexit.
